Welcome to MITACT's ACT Music Newsletter
Hey, how's it going!? Did all the festivities of the previous months wear you out? No rest for the wicked!!! '08 is going to be foot to the floor for the ACT music industry - I can just smell it (or is that the lingering stench of rubber from Summernats?)!
Here's the first newsletter for 2008, enjoy!
MUSIC INDUSTRY NEWS
INDYFEST '08 - 18th BIRTHDAY - CELEBRATING INDEPENDENT MUSIC IN THE ACT - SATURDAY 8 MARCH 2008
It's one juicy line-up this year and rightly so seeing as it's the 18th birthday of the mighty Indyfest. The event is going to be held at The Basement and will feature two stages (an indoor over 18s stage and an outdoor all ages stage) showcasing the following bands:
Moh Van Wah
Super Best Friends
Thommy & The Tank Engines
Friend or Enemy
The New Christs (Sydney)
Along with all the band goodness, news is that Indyfest will also showcase some BMX action, a fashion show put on by Raven, as well as markets and other fun festival things.
Adding more value to Indyfest is the market stalls. Indyfest are planning on hosting a number of stalls including food, drink, arts, craft, music industry and anything else within reason. So if you're interested in setting up shop at Indyfest, $50 will get you a stall - head over to the "Contact" page on the Indyfest web page to ensure you don't miss out!
Want to volunteer at Indyfest? People are needed to help out on the door, the merch desk, stage managing and general helpers. If you are interested in helping out then please contact Tess by email: firstname.lastname@example.org. Volunteering will get you free entry to the event, free food at the debriefing bbq (the following day), along with some great experience working at one of Canberra's major independent music festivals.
Keep an eye out on Indyfest.com for updates and more info!
UPSTEP 2008 - LOCAL BAND COMPETITION AND FUNDRAISER
From the Upstep Website: "Upstep is a multi-faceted "good feel" event designed to raise funds for the non-profit organisation "Tabitha Foundation Australia"; to provide support, opportunity and exposure for local musicians and business, and to provide a rich and enjoyable experience for the ACT community to enjoy as a whole."
Stage 1 of the event is to be held on the 23rd and 24th of February. The competition is open to all local original bands aged 16-25yrs - note that an entry fee of $120 per band applies and applications need to be in by the 5th of Feb. The Upstep organisers insist that such an entry fee is justified by the Grand Prize Package said to be valued at over $6,000.
Check out the Upstep Website for more information.
LOCAL DANCE MUSIC NEWS
Pang! Promotions is hosting it's 1st Birthday Party on February 1st at Lot 33 in Kingston, and features locals The Aston Shuffle, fresh back from their Sydney Big Day Out show, Hubert, and Dave Norgate alongside brit Will Bailey.
NATIONAL MULTICULTURAL FESTIVAL
The National Multicultural Festival runs from 8 to 16 February and is hosting a variety of music, theatre, dance and other performances in Civic Square. It's free and there's plenty of fine music on offer from the likes of The Fuelers, Rafe Morris, The Andi and George Band, The Cashews, Alice Cottee, and D'Opus and Roshambo. Head to the festival's official website for detailed info.
The Jamison Inn has closed it's doors. This will surely leave a hole in the local punk/hardcore scene. Hopefully the gigs that were booked there will find their way to other ACT venues.
Reports of The Greenroom's move back to Phillip have been positive with plenty of gigs already scheduled for the coming months. "The Greenroom Grand Re-Opening & 5th Birthday Celebrations" are scheduled for three days from the 31st of January to the 2nd of February - at the Greenroom's original location in Phillip. Checkout the 'room's MySpace for details!
INSIGHT AND ADVICE ON "GETTING A RECORD DEAL IN AUSTRALIA"
Brisbane based producer Stuart Stuart runs Chartsong Productions - a business specialising in developing unsigned bands and introducing them to record labels (including The Veronicas (Warner Music) and Small Mercies (Sony/BMG)). Stuart has made his CD "Getting a Record Deal in Australia" available for listening for free on MySpace. It's a good listen for an insight on the Australian music business and I recommend giving it a listen through if you haven't already. It usually costs $99 so take advantage of Stuart's offering while you can!
